A question for you: just when does the mastermind behind probably the biggest band of the 90s become an irrelevant has-been in the music business? Not quite yet, judging from Noel Gallagher’s recent musical riposte to his younger brother’s mod-bothering Beady Eye debut, Different Gear, Still Speeding.

You’ll have already heard ‘The Death of You and Me’, Gallagher’s first single off his “soon to be critically acclaimed” debut solo album, Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds (or ‘High Flying Turds’, depending on which Twitter you follow). Yes, that is the one that sounds just like ‘The Importance of Being Idle’. A second track from the album was posted online the other day, and it riles up a little bit more faith in the forthcoming release. ‘If I Had a Gun’ is more mellow and warmer than ‘The Death of You and Me’, revelling in a straight-forward modesty found lacking in much of Oasis’ last material.
