There’s probably some hipster mug somewhere who’ll see this and lose his rag over the fact that, yes, this video has been about for a while now. This is in case any DYC readers missed out. DZ Deathrays are a number of things: Australian, cool as fuck, and my personal pick for 2012’s best band. There’s two of them so they invite obvious comparisons to DFA 1979, but there’s certainly more to them than that. This particular track is a little piece of sludgey perfection, built on a driving riff that sounds on the verge of exploding to fuckery, while the video, on the other hand, is an exercise in what happens if two blokes down shots of Jagermeister for three minutes. Try it at home, kids. I saw them live and they were great. They pulled within about ten seconds of coming off stage. They are my new heroes. So give ‘The Mess Up’ a listen, but don’t stop there. Check out the filthy punk of ‘Gebbie Street’, or watch them bake a cake.
